Fishing report Inshore -  This week the inshore fishing has been pretty darn good with some very active and hungry snook, redfish, trout, and some tarpon around the area day and night. The passes have seen the same species very active at night before sunrise. The mouth of Tampa bay has held some very prolific and aggressive mangrove snapper and those can be found during the day time in most passes too around the structure. The bay’s mitigation sites and rock piles and the ledges adjacent to the shipping channel has produced some nice gag grouper. Plus, mackerel are all over the beaches, local piers, passes, the skyway and all around the mouth of Tampa Bay! The live bait has been very prolific around the area on the flats, on the bridges, in the passes and on the beaches too. We are seeing some nice sized green backs, plenty of glass minnows and some big threadfins on the beaches. These big schools of bait are holding plenty of predatory fish and making fishing more li...

Hubbard's Marina Fishing Report 9-29-19

Fishing report Inshore- The big news this week has been the clearer waters and plentiful bait fish. We have had some huge flood tides bringing lots of nearly crystal clear waters into our passes and mouths of our bays. Plus, along with that clearer water we have been seeing huge numbers of live bait like glass minnows, greenbacks, and even some threadfins closer to the gulf. These large areas of live bait have some very actively feeding predators following them around and hanging out below the schools. We are seeing lots of snook, redfish, whiting, mangrove snapper, and even a few tarpon, pompano and some sheepshead. Plus, the jack crevalle schools occasionally erupt in feeding chaos around these big schools of bait too! The mackerel seem to have pushed out a bit this past week and we haven’t seen the numbers around Johns Pass lately but the skyway area still has plenty and some of our local piers like pier 60, gulf pier, and pass a grill still has mackerel action. The snook this ...

For this type of fishing you cannot chase the fish you got to let them come to you. Often they are working a shoreline or a grass flat and you have to set up ahead of the fish and try and guestimate where the school is heading so you let the fish come to you. If you chase them or try to go right at the school they will disperse and not feed. Often there’s other boaters targeting them too that’s why it’s courteous to go a bit further up in line and get set up there and wait for the fish to move to you. Lately though, the pinfish has been the secret weapon they haven’t been wanting any other live baits.    Big black drum around the bridges inside the bay to...
